ASKED QUESTIONS...
Q.
My family and I are moving from upstate New York to the beach in
Carteret County this winter and our new home is devoid of
landscaping. Do we have to wait until Spring to landscape?
A.
Not at all. Our sandy soils never freeze and though your
plants may be dormant, their roots will grow helping the plants be
better established when the weather becomes warm.
Q.
I live in the Piedmont area of North Carolina and in the winter our
lawn grasses, for the most part, are nice and green while much of
the grass at the coast look dead. What is going on?
A.
The Piedmont is a temperate zone away from the coastal region.
With our warmer temperatures you are seeing dormant warm-season
grasses like centipede, bermuda, zoysia, and St. Augustine.
The predominant grasses in the Piedmont are any one of a number of
fescues. Their growing seasons are opposite one another as are
their care requirements. Each type of grass has it's own set
of care requirements. We recommend that you see a dependable
lawn care person or county extension agent for more information.
The great thing about our warm-season grasses is that they require
less attention in early spring and late fall when the fish are
biting the best!
Q.
What are the biggest mistakes made concerning lawn care?
A. Fertilizing,
using herbicides, and doing lawn renovations at the wrong time of
the year, not following label instructions and using inappropriate
fertilizers and pesticides. Stop watching lawn care
commercials made in Ohio and check with your local experts.
The biggest mistake made in lawn care at the Crystal Coast is
obsessing over grass when you could be golfing, fishing, or bungee
jumping!!!
Q.
I want to landscape my rental property at the beach but will not be
there to see that it is watered during dry periods. What can I
do?
A. When you do your planting,
install an automatic irrigation system or consider using plants that
require little or no water once established. There are also
bed-building techniques and materials that can lessen the need for
watering.
